Authors Comments:

Capitola has always been a safe family beach with restaurants right on the water. It is where I first learned to surf. It doesn’t break that often but when it does, the waves are slow, and the bottom is shallow and sandy. My mother took us here as children. There are several dozen unique shops throughout Capitola village with everything from candy, flipflops, clothing boutiques, and swimsuits. At low tide you can walk along the cliffs to New Brighton Beach, but make sure you get back before the tide comes in. There is a row of colorful Venetian style homes on the beach that are mostly available for rent. About a mile down the road, on 41st Avenue, is the famous O’Neill surf shop that has been a surfing Icon for almost 70 years. Capitola is an excellent attraction for day visits, shopping, dining, and beach activities. If you are going to visit in the summer, I suggest you get here early.

Overview:

Parking time limits are strictly enforced here! I'm not kidding. If you are not able to find parking right on the beach, there is a large public parking lot a few blocks away with a free shuttle service. First recognized in 1874, Capitola is considered the oldest beach resort in California. There is a restaurant at the end of the pier with rooftop dining that has seasonal music. You can also find summer music at some of the other outdoor patios on the beach. There is limited lodging in the village but plenty of restaurants and everything you need for a weekend getaway.
