Sanborn County Park is a grassy open park surrounded by Douglass fir and Redwood trees. It’s the perfect park for bringing a blanket to supplement the picnic tables and raised BBQ pits. In the “olden days”, before the park was established, it was a large apple orchard where you could see an abundance of deer feeding.
When Sanborn County Park first opened, we walked from the main park entrance to the Welch-Hurst log home and then on to Congress Springs Vineyards (now called Savannah Channel Winery). The trails of Sanborn Park have expanded over the years especially east of Sanborn Road, which were private property in the past. Some of the creeks on the east side are abundant with five finger maiden hair ferns.
The group sites are perfect for larger gatherings. I have held several high school reunions at the group sites. Many years ago I had the pleasure of helping the local stone mason in building the original rock pillars covering the BBQ pits.
One of the early rangers named Red Green always let local kids help with projects or just hang out with him and listening to his stories. Beautiful spot for picnics or family gatherings. The forest makes you feel like you are hundreds of miles away from Silicon Valley.
