Ridge Winery, on Montebello Road, has been growing grapes since 1885. The road to “Ridge” is steep and narrow with many turns, but it is only about 10 minutes up the country road. Fortunately, the traffic is minimal. Just take it slow and pull over for others.
I personally go to Ridge Winery for their complex and famous red wines. Yes, you really can taste the difference in their excellent quality. Although some of their wine comes from the local Montebello Ridge grapes, they have around 17 other growing locations mostly in the Sonoma Valley and Alexander Valley Region. There is one growing location near Paso Robles.
I would recommend this winery for the more critical connoisseur or the serious beginner. A bottle can range from $30 to $500 with many very good selections being between $50 and $100. Reservation required and can accommodate seated tasting of groups up to six. No pets, no picnics, or under 21.
