Regale Winery is known for their Cabernet and Pinot Noir, although they do have one very nice Chardonnay. The grapes come from their local vines in the Santa Cruz Mountains, as well as Napa Valley, Paso Robles, and the Russian River wine region.
There are several other wineries near Regale Winery, but this easier location makes for a less challenging drive. The estate is classic Italian architecture, the patio and gardens are exquisite, and the views of the Santa Cruz Mountains are just spectacular.
There is seating outdoors to enjoy your wine and snacks. I enjoy sitting by the far railing and looking out at the vineyard and the Santa Cruz Mountains. So far, no reservations are required, and they are open Saturday 11 to 4:30 and Sunday from 11 to 5.
Regale Winery employees are always very helpful and courteous in the tasting rooms, whether inside or out. Even though it is in the mountains, it is relatively easy access and a simple drive. Highway 17 on weekends can near gridlock. To avoid traffic, I recommend taking the Bear Creek Road exit just west of Los Gatos off Highway 17.
Loop over the freeway and take a right, following Old Santa Cruz Highway to the end. It’s a nice, peaceful, forested drive. At the top of the mountain turn left and go another two miles to Regale Winery.
Following San Jose-Soquel Road is a pleasant way to visit the oceanfront venetian village of Capitola by the Sea.
