Authors Comments:
The Peralta Adobe is a small adobe house with mud and straw walls 2 feet thick. It is the oldest dwelling in San Jose, California. The official names are the Gonzales Peralta Adobe and the Carmela and Thomas Fallon House.
The interior is furnished in the original historic era and there are tours only on weekends. It was originally built by Jose Manuel Gonzales, an indigenous Apache, who came to San Jose with the Juan Bautista de Anza Expedition leaving from Tubac Presidio, Arizona in 1774.
There were 24 people in that original party and substantial livestock including mules, cattle, and 140 horses. Quite a feat to herd 240 animals that long distance. Fortunately, they traveled through the Arizona desert in the winter months.
There are two 90-minute tours on Saturday and Sunday of both the Adobe and the Fallon House. Click on the “Peralta Adobe and Fallon House” link above. Reservation must be four days in advance. $12 to $5 depending on age.
I also recommend visiting the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles just a short drive away.
