Years ago, the Mountain Winery was owned by Paul Masson and later by Martin Ray. During those days there was no public access to the Villa or to the vineyards two miles above the village of Saratoga. The original tasting room was on Saratoga Avenue at the railroad tracks that services Permanente cement mines.
Paul Mason had several wines but was knows as a Champagne Cellar. The wines are now under the “Mountain Winery” label. When the “Paul Masson Mountain Winery” was first opened for concerts, it was an immediate hit and has remained a first-class music venue.
In their first days there were very few seats, and to make it worse they only had folding chairs on a pea-gravel floor. Now…this is a glorious, remodeled venue with steep intimate reserved seating and great sound from every location.
This is a spectacular setting and is now simply known as the Mountain Winery. The 12th century Spanish Portal backdrop is stunning. Hundred of famous performers have played here and the setting is magical.
