The Heritage Rose Garden San Jose is a large rose garden with 250 roses on 5 acres. There are over 4,000 plants. The roses are arranged in converging circles with each quadrant showcasing a unique characteristic. The garden is open to the public at no charge. Another rose garden to visit is the Municipal Rose Garden in west San Jose.
Heritage Rose Garden San Jose is located at Spring and Taylor Streets. This is near the approach to the San Jose Airport so you can also enjoy the thrill of low flying jets on their approach.
Some of my favorite roses are Peppermint Swirl, Sun Sprinkles, Autumn Splendor, Edna Marie, and Desert Peace. They can always use volunteers and offer pruning lessons when it is that time of year.
The Guadalupe River Park Conservancy also has a collection of 250 climbing roses on the fence at Santa Clara University. These can be seen at the entrance to the University at the corner of The Alameda and El Camino Real. Each section of fence has four rose varieties. A guide to those climbing roses can be found on their website under “Roses of the Santa Clara University”.
