The Exploratorium at pier 15 is one of the best science and art experiences you will ever find. Years ago, it was behind the Palace of Fine Arts and was a bit run down. Now, in its new location and with much better corporate funding, it is a first-class attraction.
Although all ages are welcome, I recommend this attraction for ages 8 and above, 6 years old if your child is a “Geo-wizzbang. The hands-on exhibits teach the scientific phenomena of the natural world with captivating displays and marvels of physics, chemistry, and lighting.
Some of my favorite exhibits are the Archimedes parabola, the tornado, the wave organ, and watching water freeze. I also enjoyed the florescence exhibit showing how household items like tonic water, lettuce, Irish Spring soap, and petroleum jelly are all phosphorescent.
There are many extraordinary art exhibits, including the “Glow” artists featuring Chika and the Nick Dong Experience. Give yourself at least four to six hours to explore all the interactive displays and educational opportunities.
The Exploratorium a perfect venue for rainy days and is less crowded on weekdays. I recommend bringing your own lunch. Admission is around $30 for adults and $20 for children. Parking is $20 available at Pier 19 1/2 up to four hours.
The Exploratorium is a short walk from Pier 39.
