The de Young Museum is another must see attraction if you are an art, history, or culture enthusiast. This museum has a variety of art ranging from the 17th century to present, housed in a beautiful modern building.
Their collection encompasses art of the Americas, Oceanic art (Pacifica Islands), African art, costume (fashion), and textiles. Their costume and fashion collection is one of the largest in the United States with over 13,000 pieces.
My favorite is the Early American art and especially the art of the American West. They feature artists such as Thomas Cole, John Copley, Edward Hopper, George Bingham, and Georgia O’Keeffe. The cost is very reasonable for a quality art gallery at $15 and free if you are under 17.
Special exhibits may cost more but are well worth it. I paid the extra for the Judy Chicago special exhibit and it was remarkable. The de Young Museum is a “sister” museum with the Legion of Honor so check to see if any of your fees cover both locations. Give yourself at least three to four hours to see all the exhibits just at the de Young Museum.
