Cinnabar Hills Golf Course is my number one choice for a fully public golf course in Silicon Valley. There are three courses in the hills above south San Jose: Mountain, Lake, and Canyon. I find the Canyon course being the most difficult. All three are superb.
Rates fluctuate around $70 for twilight to $110 on prime time weekends. My son and I always took the first twilight spot which allowed him free golf until he turned 18. Great deal including GPS cart. This is a scenic course in secluded oak studded foothills, with no housing, wide-open fairways, and some picturesque, elevated tees.
Very well maintained and drains well in the winter. Cinnabar Hills Golf Course has beautiful contoured fairways and excellent large greens. It is even somewhat forgiving if you stray a shot into the next fairway. There is the noteworthy Lee Brandenburg golf museum in the lobby and a large restaurant with quality food and a large bar. Great course, great scenery, and a great value.
Nearby is the famous and more exclusive CordeValle Golf Course.
