If you happen to be in the area of 2145 McKee Road near Jackson Street be sure to stop by the Chinese Cultural Garden and the Overfelt Gardens, both at the same location. This is a park with 32 acres of relatively flat walking paths, that are both wheelchair and stroller friendly.
It is a peaceful park in a city setting. Included in the park is the Chinese Cultural Garden. In the past, there was a historical tour of the park and it’s Chinese history. There are several authentic Chinese buildings and impressive statues including Chaing Kai-Shek and Confucius. Chaing Kai-Shek was a Chinese Nationalist leader and Confucius was a philosopher teaching honor and respect.
Although the tours are on hold, they would teach the differences between eastern and western philosophy. A good book on this subject is Psychotherapy East & West by Alan Watts. Also at the park is the “Black Rock” sculpture that is over 1 million years old and portrays the theme of “loyalty”.
The Chinese Cultural Garden is a very peaceful park and touches on some important Chinese culture and architecture. Admission is free. Nearby is Happy Hollow Zoo and the Japanese Friendship Garden.
