Castle Rock State Park. As teenagers, we enjoyed walking into Castle Rock falls to sunbath on the flat rocks below. It happened to be private property at that time. The falls are always very small but have a decent flow in the springtime and enough water to rinse off after exploring King Creek.
Be aware, today scrambling below the falls is dangerously steep and is absolutely off limits, as is King Creek watershed. There was no trail in those days, however today the trail to the falls is well maintained and relatively simple.
A walk to Castle Rock falls overlook is about right for young children. The entire west side of Skyline to the Sea Trail has beautiful sandstone rock outcroppings and views all the way to the Pacific Ocean. You can see that the sandstone was once under the ocean and if you are observant, you can find seashells embedded in the rocks.
In the springtime The flowers are spectacular along Trail. There are four climbing rocks: Castle Rock, Goat Rock, Summit Rock, and Indian Rock. Goat Rock and Castle Rock being the most popular.
Unfortunately, Summit Rock was off limits in the 60’s and police raided kids sneaking in there. Never caught most of us as we hide down the steep hillside for a few hours. Goat Rock has a rounded-out cave inside the sandstone that is large enough to sleep in overnight. Remember that was way before trails and rangers. Don’t even think of spending the night at Goat Rock. It may well get you a trip to jail.
There are walk-in campsites north of Goat Rock, but you must get there before curfew or again or it could cost you a trip downtown. On you way down the mountain explore Hakone Japanese Garden and Savannah Chanelle Winery just above Saratoga
