The Big Sur Coast is a full day trip from Silicon Valley, however it is so beautiful it is hard to exclude. It is south of Monterey and Carmel by the Sea, on a 90-mile drive on a two-lane road. Driving south you are on the edge of the cliffs (guardrails included). Driving northbound you are on the inland side of the road (less anxiety). The scenery on this road is spectacular and if you are heading south to Hearst Castle or Los Angeles this longer route is impressive.
A few recommended hikes along the way are at Point Lobos, Partington Cove, and McWay Falls. The McWay Falls trail takes you to a lookout for pictures. However, you are not allowed access to the beach or the waterfall.
If you happen to see a California Condor official vehicle along the Big Sur Coast, stop to experience a glimpse of the largest birds in the world. Their wingspan can be over 9 feet. When the Condors come down to the beach to feed on dead seals and sea lions they can get too accustomed to people. Consequently they are sprayed with giant squirt guns to help keep them at bay.
There are a few famous restaurants, hotels, and gift shop along the drive that you should not miss. Always check road conditions for Highway 1, as large storms wash out the road for months at a time. The drive ends up at Hearst Castle, San Simeon, and the village of Cambria. This is not a commuter road, so drive slowly and enjoy the coastline. Pull over and allow others to pass.
