Alviso is located at the very southern tip of San Francisco Bay and parts of it are below sea level. At one time, before the railroads, merchandise from San Jose was ferried to San Francisco from Alviso. The Alviso Marina has a trail system that takes you far out onto San Francisco Bay. The park is known for its wetland marshes and abundance of wildlife, especially marsh birds. Bicycles are a good way of venturing out onto the narrow jetties. There is kayaking and a floating safari tour. The park services free floating safari boat ride is very informative and an unknown adventure to most. There are a few very well know restaurants in Alviso, which have survived the high tides and occasional flooding. If you plan to Kayak, be sure to go out in a “flood tide” and avoid the “ebb tide”. The combination of a northerly winds and a lowering tide will make it difficult to return. Remember, all the water in San Francisco Bay gets pulled out under the narrow Golden Gate Channel at a depth of 360 feet. If you happen to be a golfer, there is a state-of-the-art driving range nearby called Topgolf.
