Authors Comments:

Alcatraz Federal Prison is another one of those bucket list excursions. The boat ride to the prison offers the very best views of the San Francisco skyline. While on the ferry boat, you will witness an easy-to-visualize perspective of San Francisco skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge. The Alcatraz tour requires walking uphill on a ¼ mile paved ramp from the boat to the prison. If that walk is too demanding there is a shuttle that will take you to the top of the hill. Once on top you will be given a headset with a remote audio tour (in nine languages) that lets you go at your own pace. When touring Alcatraz, you will see the actual cells of the prisoners and the dummies that were made by the famous “Escape from Alcatraz” prisoners. This place will make you think twice about breaking the law. Although there is an annual swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco, in the early days, that was considered suicidal. The bay has extremely strong river-like currents, that you can see from the boat, 54-degree water, and sharks. The great views from the prison recreation yard are the only “plus” about being locked up here. Although the standard walking audio tour is excellent, the extended private tour is recommended if you want a deeper guided experience.

Overview:

In the early years, Alcatraz was a military base and at one time had 105 canons positioned around the island. It then became both a military prison as well as a garrison to house troops and store guns. Eventually the Department of Justice took it over and in 1934 there were 137 harden convicts relocated to the prison. Some of them included Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud (the "Birdman of Alcatraz"), George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Bumpy Johnson, political terrorists Rafael Cancel Miranda, Mickey Cohen, Arthur R. "Doc" Barker, and Alvin "Creepy" Karpis. The federal prison was closed in 1963 and for several years it was taken over and occupied by indigenous people citing a law that allows Native Americans to reclaim any of their land that had been abandoned by the government or out of use. The Park is now run by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area - Nation Park Service. There are several parking lots near the Pier 33 Ferry launch ranging from $10 a day to $6/hour. The Muni F-line (historic trolley car) will also take you to pier 33. Reservations and fees apply to this attraction. Tours are run by “Alcatraz City Tours”. Others may sell tickets also.
