Filoli Gardens

Filoli Historic House and Garden is a beautiful 56 room mansion and garden nestled in the Woodside hills, directly on the San Andreas Fault. The home is Georgian Revival Architecture detailed with symmetrical chimneys, the classic five windows above the paneled front door, a centered entrance with portico, fanlight windows, symmetrical dormers, and a hipped roof sloping on all sides. The gardens are English Renaissance which are not only symmetrical but also blend with nature and are detailed with box hedges, brick pathways, ponds, a rose garden, and a long rectangular swimming pool lined with Italian Cypress trees. The interior is beyond words with its patterned marble flooring, impressive wall paneling, and massive but ornate molding. The Filoli ballroom, the library, and the kitchen are my favorites. The two-room kitchen, one for serving and one for preparation, has 17-foot ceilings, black and white checkerboard floors, and a vault for the expensive silverware. When you visit Filoli, take the time to appreciate the detailed interior from floor to ceiling as well as the architectural features from outside. Tickets are around $25 for adults and $15 for 17 and under. If you really want to delve into the property and appreciate all its detail, I recommend 3-4 hours. Picnicking is a good option between touring the house and the garden. Check their website for creative off season and holiday displays.
